Smartforest -Smartforest, is an interactive, 3-dimensional
represented, application that can rotate and be walked through in
realtime. This project comes out of the Imaging Systems Laboratory at
the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

project being developed at T.J. Watson research Laboratory. The
product provides continuous visual displays of the behavior of a
program and an underlying system.
Ten -A project created at the University of Kansas' Design
Laboratory. The project is an interactive graphics application to
visualize the powers of ten.
FAD Toolkit -A project studying visualization using nonlinear
GroupKit -This may be a stretch, but I thought that I would
include it for now. It comes out of the University of Calgary and it is
a number of visual, group specific, applications.
Vis_tiger -This project stems out of the Office of Academic
Computing at the University of California at Los Angeles. It is a
software application that allows user to visualize Tiger, an Us
Census Bureau program.
XTango Algorithm Animation System -
XTANGO is a general purpose algorithm animation system that supports
programmers developing color, real-time, 2 & 1/2 dimensional, smooth
animations of their own algorithms and programs.
PVani 2.0 -The PVaniM 2.0 system provides online and postmortem
visualization support as well as rudimentary I/O for
long running, communication-intensive PVM applications.
Analyst Home Page -This is not a project, but an interesting site
on graphical representations of 2-D data types.
Tool is a tool being developed at U. of Texas at Pan American for

Interesting VRML Applications
- Daniel Gassert, Duke: site which lists examples of VRML applications in
architecture, medical imaging, education, etc.
DataSPLASH - University of Berkeley: A project to interactively
visualize the tables of a relational database. Includes dynamic
generation and manipulation of objects within the database.
- University of Wisconsin: This project uses the idea of having
various visualizations at the same time. The
visualizations can be applied one after another to obtain different
views of the same data. The approach is very similar to forming a
query on a database using a set of concatenated functions. The result
is a picture of the database which can not be dynamically manipulated
by the user.
DQI - University of Maryland: Main research on Dynamic Querying
continues at the University of Maryland in the Human-Computer
Interaction Lab. The main idea is to help user create scatter plot
views of the data set and manipulate them using direct manipulation
techniques. This research was implemented recently as a commercial
application which is known as Spotfire by IVEE Development Co.
Influence Explorer - Imperial College: This project also uses the
benefits of direct manipulation and Dynamic Querying ideas. This
approach displays histogram information of the attributes
NASA: The approach uses the tight coupling (linking) of the different
visualizations of the data. It is developed for scientific
visualization purposes (e.g., atmospheric data visualization). But the
output is not just a rendering of the input data. The tool can be used
to dynamically analyze it.
Lens - XEROX PARC: The main method used in this project is to
apply various functions to a specified region of the data set that is
being visualized. For example, the simplest function that can be used
for this purpose is the zooming operation on a certain area of
interest of the data set.
Explorer - IBM: This project uses the parallel coordinate system
to show different projections of the data. It is highly dynamic. The
approach is capable of showing huge numbers of attributes at the same
Carnegie Mellon University: In this project different visualizations
of the same data are linked together. The user can see changes on all
visualizations simultaneously by just manipulating one.
Table Lens -
XEROX PARC: The Table Lens shows spread-sheet data in both symbolic
and graphical representations within a single understandable
view. Users can chose and manipulate regions of the table.
Visage - Carnegie Mellon University: The same group from the SDM
project contributes to this work. The main paradigm is still to
coordinate different visualizations via direct manipulation
techniques. This project uses a new drill-down and roll-up based
navigation method to travel inside the database. The application
automatically selects the best possible visualization for a given data
VisDB - University of Munich: The main paradigm is to show the
similarities between attributes of the data. The definition of the
similarity function is left to the user. Color and distance is used to
give a sense of similarity between attributes.
VizControls - XEROX PARC: Set of applications including Magic
Lens, Table Lens, and others.
World Within Worlds - Columbia University: Mainly for visualization of functions as different 3D graphs.
AT&T: Allows different visualizations of the same data set
simultaneously and dynamically. The product is capable of taking
various projections of an n-dimensional data set on various attributes
and then animates these projections. Originally developed at Bellcore.

context within a huge hierarchy, while
simultaneously providing easy access to details.

Visage provides an environment for exploring, analyzing, and visualizing
WebTOC. HCIL - University of Maryland. By following local links,
WebTOC generates and displays a hierarchical representation of the
documents local to the site in the standard web-browsing environment.
Info Cube. Sony. This technique is based on the nested box metaphor and uses 3D
TreeBrowser Abstract. HCIL - University of Maryland. Treeview is a
traditional hierarchy viewing object using a link-node
TreeMap. HCIL - University of Maryland. Treemaps are a novel
visualization approach which completely utilizes the display as well as
being able to place over 5,000 nodes on the screen.

TreeViz is a Macintosh implementation of the Treemap concept.
WebSpace. University of Minnesota. WebSpace is a program developed
to visualize the connections between HTML documents. Several types of display are

tool that views the web as a graph with the nodes being pages and the
links are represented as edges in the graph.

Docuverse represents a large document space in colored pie segments,
somewhat similiar to the structures of treemaps.

MIN-Graph. University of Texas at San Antonio - The tool can be
used to instrument, analyze and visualize the performance of multiple
processors, to help user find inefficiency.
Giotto3D. Brown University - Draws 2D representation of a directed
acylic graph (DAG) first, and then lifts vertices along a third
dimension such that the drawing is upward in the third dimension. The
motivation is that upward drawings are more readable because the
placement of vertices reflects the hierarchy. It applies to any
DAG's. The interaction support include navigation (rotation,
translation, zooming), filtering (show only selected objects, show
only the descendents of selected objects, (future) a query language),
focus+context display (graying out objects not in focus).
Visual Insights. Lucent Technologies - general network
visualization tool. It has been used to do geographically-based network
visualization (using animation to show changes over time).

Switzerland - Each resource on the Web is mapped to a vector. A
self-organizing neural network is used to reduce the
dimensionality. Symbolisation (put things that that look like rivers
or mountains) between resources that are actually far apart but are
close after the dimension reduction.
